Hapū from the four Iwi affiliated with Wakatū Incorporation - Ngāti Koata, Ngāti Rārua, Ngāti Tama and Te Ātiawa - are connected to five Marae in Te Tau Ihu (the Top of the South Island).

Whakatū Marae

Whakatū Marae with its large whare kai (dining hall) and wharenui (meeting hall) is the focal point for Nelson’s Māori community. It is the southernmost Marae associated with the Kingitanga movement and the kawa (protocol) is Tainui. All four Iwi (tribes) affiliated to Wakatū are connected to this Marae, as are Ngāti Toa Rangatira and Ngāti Kuia.

The first modern building on the site was Te Ahurewa Church, built in 1897.
